The agreement is continuation of the signed contract between Russia and Norway on differentiation of sea spaces and cooperation in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean. As explains the ministry, exploration works on the shelf which are mainly presented by seismic exploration impose certain specifics on a technique of "field" works. As a result of earlier carried out seismic exploration from the Russian and Norwegian sides along frontier the zone up to 10 km wide with lack of seismic data was formed. "The signed agreement establishes the order allowing to cover completely with seismic data border water areas and also to increase reliability of mapping of perspective geological objects" — it is said in the statement. On January 20, 2017 it became known that the Government of the Russian Federation has approved the draft agreement between Russia and Norway on an order of collecting seismic data on the shelf of the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean. The Ministry of Natural Resources was entrusted to hold negotiations with the Norwegian side and to sign this agreement on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation, "having allowed to make the changes which don't have basic character to the enclosed project".
