The WWF has urged to transfer all Arctic vessels to LNG — Rambler News Service

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) considers necessary to transfer all Arctic vessels from fuel oil on the liquefied natural gas (LNG) for decrease in damage from oil spills in the Arctic, it is said in the statement of the organization. As notes WWF, increase in traffic flow in the Arctic inevitably leads also to growth of risks of petrofloods. At the same time at the moment in the world there are no technical and organizational capabilities and successful practical experience of elimination large (more than 100 tons) oil spills and oil products in the presence of an ice cover. "The refusal of so-called "heavy fuel" (naval fuel oil) in favor of liquefied natural gas could become the cardinal solution of this problem. The WWF within several years conducts work on studying of potential of use of LNG as bunker fuel for the Russian Arctic. Vessels on LNG in the last two years become the general tendency of development of world shipbuilding and navigation: in Finland the most advanced ice breaker of Polaris is floated, there are already in a construction phase tows, container carriers, large tankers, huge cruise vessels capable to use LNG", - it is said in the statement. The WWF also specifies that the analysis which is carried out by the organization shows that replacement of fuel oil with LNG can become favorable to the country not only with nature protection, but also from the economic point of view. According to experts, additional ecological and economic benefits can be reached if the problem of replacement of coal and fuel oil by LNG within "northern delivery" also is added to problems of replacement of naval fuel oil in the Arctic.
